Each pallet has a maximum uniform load weight of 5000 lbs. A standard spacing of 4 inches provides 3 inches of material stack height. We recommend leaving between 1 to 3 inches of clearance from the top of your material stack to the bottom of your next pallet.
Yes, you may have custom spacing between each pallet location, but it is still required to keep up to 5,000 lbs or less uniform loads on the pallets. Increased spacing is ideal for lighter materials at smaller sizes, giving you the most sheet metal storage density.

Using Big Steel Rack pallets instead of returnable pallets eliminates any additional material transferring time. We recommend requesting your material supplier to transfer the sheet metal onto BSR pallets directly, instead of returnable ones.
If returnable pallets are not an option, we suggest switching to 3×3 to 4×4 wood battens or runners for all materials stacks. Making the transfer process a lot more efficient.
You can opt for a Big Steel Rack Depalletizer, which allows you to transfer material from wood pallets to Big Steel Rack pallets. The BSR Depalletizer provides support for the sheet metal bundle while debanding, allowing it to be transferred safely onto BSR sheet metal pallets.
All Big Steel Rack storage systems are designed and built to meet ANSI and AISC standards. Each system receives a third-party professional engineer’s approval to ensure all standards are met.
We recommend havint at least 3 to 4 feet of clearance above to ensure your forklift mast doesn’t come into contact with any overhead piping, cranes, or building structures. You will need approximately 5 feet of clearance to upright your Big Steel Rack storage system during installation.
